A Passage North is a beautiful, understated novel which I was very keen to read after it was longlisted for the Booker Prize. On the surface, this is a very simple novel: in the first section of the novel, Krishan, a young man in Colombo, Sri Lanka, receives news that Rani, his grandmother's carer has died in the northeast of the country.
